17 February 2003 - A worldwide competition to find out who can iron in the most bizarre, funny, unusual or extreme place has been launched by the Extreme Ironing Bureau on its website, www.extremeironing.com.

The Rowenta Trophy, sponsored by the well-known iron manufacturer, invites participants to submit a picture that best demonstrates ironing under extreme conditions. The competition is free to enter and runs until 30 April 2003, and the top three pictures will feature in a book about extreme ironing due to be published in October this year. The winning ironist and photographer will each receive the EIB-favoured Rowenta Professional iron, perfect for "pressing perfection".
The Rowenta Trophy follows the success of the first Extreme Ironing World Championships last year in Munich in which female German ironist, Hot Pants and British team, GB1 beat off stiff competition from 80 ironists to win the individual and team events. The EIB also ran a picture competition in 2001, which was won by a team from London for ironing at 1,893 metres on the Aiguillette d'Argentiere near Chamonix in the French Alps.
Commenting on the launch of the Rowenta Trophy, the founder of Extreme ironing, Phil Shaw aka Steam said: "We've had hundreds of pictures submitted to our website from extreme ironists taking ironing to the edge, but we want to see who's the best of the best in 2003. The judges will be looking for unusual styles of extreme ironing as well as the more extreme locations. All we ask is that people take full safety procedures - irons are hot and we don't want people getting burnt or hurting themselves.”
David Jeanson, Senior Product manager for Rowenta, added: "For Rowenta it was an obvious decision to support the Extreme Ironing Bureau, as we have launched a new range of steam irons with extreme performance. Why not associate ironing and fun? Extreme ironing is really fun to look at, for some of our users ironing is good relaxing therapy."
Basket, the competition co-ordinator said: "Extreme ironing is almost becoming a mainstream sport now, more people than ever are taking it up and there's a real interest in events like to let people show off their skills. We're always amazed by the lengths people go to get the creases out of their clothes and following the success of the team from London in 2001, I'll be interested to see which country produces the picture of the most extreme ironing."

About Extreme Ironing
The sport that is 'extreme ironing' is an outdoor activity that combines the danger and excitement of an 'extreme' sport with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt. It was started in 1997 by Leicester knitwear worker, Phil Shaw, when he returned from work after a hard day in a knitwear factory to a pile of ironing. Preferring the idea of an evening out rock climbing, he decided to combine the two activities into a new sport: extreme ironing.
Extreme ironing involves ironing items of laundry in remote, inhospitable, dangerous or unusual locations. It usually combines a discipline of another extreme sport such as rock climbing, mountaineering, canoeing, scuba diving or surfing with the mundane task of domestic ironing. Participants of the sport are known as ironists and pride themselves in returning to work on a Monday morning with a freshly-ironed shirt, which was pressed at the weekend whilst dangling from a rock face or riding the rapids.
Around 500 people from around the world are estimated to take part in this "niche" extreme sport which had its first world championships in Munich in 2002.
