It's a North versus South battle as two British ironists go iron-to-iron to set a new world record for running the London marathon (18th April 2004) with full extreme ironing kit.
|
Inspired by the efforts of Paul 'Vet' Cooper and Peter Wheeler in the Tough Guy challenge, Matthew Hearne ' Crease Lightnin' from Leeds in Yorkshire and Matthew Bagwell 'Ironman-M' from Brighton in Sussex are both combining marathon running with ironing to raise money for charity.
Crease Lightnin has already caught the attention of the Yorkshire Post (see right) and is raising money for Cancer Research UK. "I've taken place in three marathons before, but never considered the possibilities of ironing at the same time," he says. "My fastest time was in New York last year, but I think that the extra weight of an ironing board will add at least another hour on to my time."
Crease Lightnin and Ironman-M - raising money for SPARKS - have been exchanging training tips and are looking forward to challenge. "Imagine yourself ironing for five hours. Now imagine yourself running the 2004 Flora London Marathon. For most of us, neither of these is a particularly inspiring thought. Imagine doing both - at the same time!" IMM states on his charity website.

Steam adds: "Here at the EIB, we wish the two Matthews all the luck in the world. Running over 26 miles is gruelling enough - let alone with an ironing board and iron. So, if you're in London on 18th April, make sure you go down and lend your support. Or, better still, pop a donation on their websites. Iron on dudes."

I'm kind of myffed as to why you think you are the "first to run a marathon ironing" when there is documented evidence that I ran the Australian Sydney City to Surf (CBD to Bondi Beach) last AUGUST (2003), and it appears on the Australian Extreme Ironing page (www.extremeironingOz.com). I was even interviewed by the media at the end.
I currently hold the world record... cos no one else has attempted it as far as I know!!!..... if you beat it (and i must say it wouldn't be hard as i came 47000th or so out of 58000 entries) well good luck to you! I didn't do it for charity though, i must admit that's a good idea.

Thank you for your comments Fabulon.
I checked out the Australian web site, and it clearly states that you ran the 14km Sydney City to Surf road race (Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach).
A marathon is defined as a footrace of 26 miles 385 yards (41.3 kilometers), which is approximately three times the distance of your ironing run. Hence as far as I and the organisers of Extreme Ironing know, we will be the first to do an actual marathon (and one of the top marathons in the world at that).
Bring on the streets of London!!!!

You're both right of course, although I don't think these guys are claiming to run with an ironing board for the first time, but we're fairly sure it's a first at the London marathon.
The main point for Ironman-M and Crease Lightnin is to add an extra dimension to running the marathon to help raise money for their charities. This is, of course, partly the idea behind extreme ironing - making normal "domestic" ironing more difficult, and therefore interesting, by combining it with an "extreme" sport.
Ironing fans should check out www.extremeironingoz.com though. It's full of the craziest Australian extreme ironing efforts - though I'm sure there's loads more Ozzie ironists out there that aren't yet on the site....

I applaud anyone who enters a race, be it the Tough Guy, the Sydney City to Surf or indeed the London Marathon, running with a Board and Iron but I’m surprised by the posting by Fabulon – surely ‘Extreme Ironists’ aren’t so precious!
I do agree with the sentiments of the reply by matthearne, a Marathon is a specific distance and if you are really keen on ‘pressing’ for glory, setting records or claiming a title you should ensure you select the appropriate distance. The London Marathon is recognised as one of the top Marathons of the world and rates alongside the New York Marathon. There is the Sydney Marathon on September 12, 2004 so Fabulon a challenge awaits you and your Iron & board! For what it’s worth I’m sure that will give you a far greater sense of achievement than your previous success!

It is important for you to remember that regardless of what you choose, you need to pay close attention to your talent wow power leveling tree because it makes quite a difference in the effectiveness of your character.
Druids are great characters but a lot of groups shy away from them because the changing characters wow power leveling can make it difficult for the other group members to know how to act. The uncertainty of a druid’s spec can cause some best wow gold problems, but there are also advantages. Some groud wow gold uk as primary healers, but more probably use them as secondary healers. Druids also make good DPS attackers. They can cheapest wow gold also be good primary tanks and offtanks. If you want to join a group, you just have to know how to market yourself so that your positive attributes seem to outweigh your negatives.
You should also gold for wow mention to the group that druids buffs add thorns as a damage shield. They also add a bonus to
all world of warcraft power leveling stats, resistances, and armor. If you are certain to approach the group by mentioning these extra buffs, a lot of them will be willing to accept you. After all, you can’t
have world of warcraft power leveling too many.
